WannaCry/WannaCrypt/WanaCrypt0r 2.0 is the latest ransomware out there targeting Windows machines. Ransomware basically holds your personal files hostage until you pay the creator of the virus. Once on a computer WanaCrypt checks the network and spreads through Windows file sharing infecting vulnerable computers on the network.
Please remember your backups! Your best defense against these infections are image backups. Once your files have been encrypted you can only get them back via these backups or by paying the ransom (sometimes unsuccessfully). If you need help with your backups we can assist you with a backup plan by either install an internal imaging drive for your desktop or setting you up with a USB external doing regular images. Call us or come by for more information. Here’s Carbonite’s write up on the 3-2-1 backup plan: https://www.carbonite.com/en/cloud-backup/business/resources/carbonite-blog/what-is-3-2-1-backup/.
To protect yourself please make sure your Antivirus program is up to date. It also never hurts to run a scan with an anti-malware program. We recommend Avast (https://www.avast.com/en-us/index) and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (https://www.malwarebytes.com/).
Microsoft has issued an emergency update to fix the vulnerability this ransomware uses. If your Windows Updates are not running automatically or you want to be sure you’re protected by manually downloading the patch Microsoft issues you can find it here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/ms17-010.aspx. You can also follow these instructions to turn on automatic updates or confirm yours are on: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/306525/how-to-configure-and-use-automatic-updates-in-windows.
Download the update relating to the version of windows you have. If you are unsure which version of windows you have you can hit both the windows key and the Pause/Break key at the same time to bring up the system properties. Alternatively you can right click on your My Computer icon and select Properties.
